English Language Fun Facts

Has anyone ever wondered how old the English language is? Well, for starters all I can say is that this language is more than 1300 years old. As simple as it may seem, it is that much stranger. It is a funny language.

I mean, have you thought about why an eggplant is called an eggplant even when there is no egg? Or ham in hamburger, neither apple nor pine in pineapple.

Did you know that supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, a word made popular through the movie Mary Poppins is actually not the longest word and roughly means “fantastic.”

Coming back to the longest word, Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is a type of lung disease. Try and pronounce that one! Rather try not!

The English language is definitely a mysterious language. Have you ever asked for sweetmeats and received candies? Or ordered sweetbreads that are not actually sweet? Speaking the language is easy, learning or trying to make sense of it – don’t even TRY!

However, it is a fun language that is universally accepted and keeps us all connected. A language that is more active than any of us because every two hours a new word is added to the dictionary.

Ah! Well for me, it is a language that entertains me, educates me and informs me.
